5 tips to organize your next move

Are you gearing up for a move?

Maybe career changes are spear heading moves but I think in today’s climate people are taking advantage of their children’s distance learning and the new work from home normal for a lot of businesses and deciding that this is the right time to relocate.

5 tips to help you organize your next move!

Purge as you go

Do you really want to physically move something from one place to another that no longer serves you or your family? I know I don’t. I find moving the perfect time to remove items you no longer want in you life. Take this time to purge as you pack to remove excess from your home and life.

To make this easier on yourself I suggest hiring a service to collect donations and/or remove junk from your home in one swoop. I’ve used 1-800-Got-Junk when we first moved into our home to remove packaging and they were incredibly fast, reasonably priced and made the process easy. Try running a quick google search for your area and see if there are any charities that offer pick ups. If you know that items you are donating will be picked up by someone else, thus removing the responsibility to remove it yourself, you’re more likely to purge more then normal.

Pack by room

My number one moving tip would have to be to pack room by room. Instead of attempting to gather all like objects together into one box, I recommend packing each room as you go. For example, starting in the kitchen and packing each drawer or cupboard into their own box, oven and stove items in one box etc.

Clearly label

Grab a sharpie and a blue packaging tape and very clearly write which room the box is destined to go into. Be sure to do this on all sides so you can easily spot and move the box into the correct space when you arrive to your destination.

Hack it

There are so many hacks to make moving easier! Check out the links below to help you find some great ones:

Make moving in easier

Ya know what makes you super tired? Moving. Packing, transporting and unpacking. It’s exhausting. Spending a little time organizing the home comforts for the first arrival in your new space will make a huge difference to your moving day.

  • Prepare and pack a dinner so when you arrive at your destination food is super easy and ready to go.

  • Don’t want to prepare something? Jump onto doordash or grubhub and have your favorite food delivered to your doorstep. You can even schedule a delivery so you can organize it well in advance and then forget about it until dinner time.

  • Prepare a special moving bag for each family member. This bag (suitcase or box) can include pajamas for the night, bed linens, special toys for kiddos and books. Anything that is a home comfort to you and your family. This makes for a much smoother first night instead of running around and trying to figure out where you put a teddy bear!

  • Research some ways to make road trips easy and fun if you’re traveling a longer distance with family members.

  • Traveling long haul? Check out these tips to help with your transport.

Moving is hard for everyone! But spending some time before hand organizing your home and yourself can make a world of difference.
