The First Reset of the Day That Sets Me Up For Success

Reset, tidy, put back, shuffle, reboot, transformed.

So many amazing words for the same homemaking concept. My favorite is ‘reset’ although tidy is always a close second and I’ve just discovered reboot which, to be honest, is giving reset a run for its money.

What is a reset?

A reset is when you put a space back to its original state, or to put it another way, return it to the state that it was in before you used it. Everything gets put back where it belongs and the space is refresehed.

What it’s not

A reset is not a full routine for me, it’s only PART of my routine. So when we look at my morning reset it is just part of my morning routine which takes place between 6:00-8:00. When you’re designing your own routines and resets keep in mind that the reset is folded into a larger routine.

My Morning Reset

My first reset of the day is right after I wake up, shower and get myself ready. I work room by room to reset each space so it’s put back to where it should be. We have three bedrooms on our upper floor, our second guest room, my daughters room and our primary bedroom. We also have two bathrooms and a hall closet which is where I store blankets, towels medications and personal supplies.

My step-by-step

  • Open all curtains and open windows. Even if the weather is a bit chilly or not great, I like to try and open all the windows to get fresh air circulating around the upper floor for at least 30 minutes.

  • Make our bed and shake out any bedding. We have a family quilt on our bed along with a large chunky knit blanket my Husband gifted to me several years ago. Both get a good shake before being put back onto the bed.

  • Put any laundry left out into the hamper or hang back up for future wear.

  • Put away anything left on bathroom counter in primary bathroom.

  • Open window in shower room, straighten bath towels on hangers and close shower door to maximize air dry time.

  • Put away anything left on bedside tables

  • Check my daughters bedroom. She is in charge of making her bunk bed and straightening her room. Sometimes she may leave some things out so I just quickly put it away.

  • Check my daughters bathroom. Do a quick rinse of the sink.

  • I normally don’t do much in our secondary guest bedroom. If someone is staying in that space clearly I’m not going to waltz in and start tidying it up. If nobody is in the space then there really isn’t anything to do anyways! I will open windows however.

  • Every two weeks I will check our hall closet to ensure things are tidy. I will check our medicine cabinet (cold, flu, first aid, emergency) and see if I need to pick anything up. I will check additional throw blankets to see if they need a wash etc.

That’s it! Normally this takes me between 10-15 minutes and it helps me greet a new day on the right foot. When I walk downstairs into our kitchen I know that I’m leaving the upper floor completely refreshed for the day ahead.

Do you reset your bedroom when you first wake up? How does it affect your day? And if you don’t maybe give it a try this week and see how you feel throughout your day.
